Drew's Bday Party: The Deets

Here are all the details of Drew's Bday party...just for (my) memory'a sake because my memory is horrific.

We chose a construction theme because: A. He loves anything truck related. B. We hadn't been to a construction party before.  And C. I had tons of party related ideas for such a party theme!

The cake: Ugbie and I made chocolate cupcakes (because according to Evan chocolate is for boys, vanilla for girls...just an FYI).  We did homemade buttercream icing we tinted yellow, and created a retro, hostess-esque style cupcake with chocolate buttercream swirls. The toppers I got custom made from Etsy.com via seller http://www.embellishgoods.com/.

The decorations consisted of yellow and orange balloons, tools, traffic cones, lots of caution tape, and tons of pictures of Drew in his hard hat. I stacked the presents on an orange step ladder that I forgot to take a picture of. There was a slideshow (SHOCKER) of Drew playing on the TV, with pictures of him over the last two years. I also made a banner and hung it in the dining room, also downloaded from etsy.com via the same seller.

The food was all themed out as well, my favorite thing to do.  I'm kind of a one trick pony when it comes to parties. Here was the menu:

Construct a Sandwich: Chicken salad, various cold cuts and cheeses, etc. with rolls and buns (AKA the lumber yard)

Drill Bits: Shrimp pasta salad with feta cheese and fresh parsley, recipe via Pioneer Woman's website

Nuts and Bolts: Trail Mix

Spare Tires: Chocolate covered donuts

Fruit Salad: Fruit Salad because I couldn't think of any cool names

Hummus and Veggies: Hummus and Veggies, again, creativy was gone at this point

Fuel: Soda, water, coffee and cherry limeade

Favors: We gave out Reese's pieces (because the colors matched my theme of course!), books about tractors, pink and yellow hard hats, and construction stickers!

Invites: I created them on http://www.tinyprints.com/

Games: The kids played outside on the back porch in the water and sand table and in little boxes I created with sand, beans and rice.  Something I have learned from not cleaning out the sand box promptly, beans will sprout in sand with just the tiniest bit of water and almost no sunlight!  Good to know, No?

I also learned that I am not meant to throw any two year old a birthday party.  For Evan, my water broke 2 months early a few days before his 2nd birthday party, so it was cancelled.  With Drew, he came down with a fever, about 12 hours before his party, and a mysterious illness ALMOST made me cancel it.  But I ended up having it anyway because his fever subsided and he seemed better, the only drawback was Drew was not in a very good mood, refused to eat anything and proceeded to cry while people sang Happy  Birthday to him.  BUMMER!

But all in all, the party was a success because we were surrounded by many friends and family!!!
